Les œuvres de Pierre Blache, Laurence Hervieux Gosselin, Clara Lacasse, Pamela Markus, Isabelle Parson, Sylvie Readman et Denis Rioux, ont été retenues pour la façon dont elles mettent en valeur cet intérêt pour la lumière et en ce qu’elle est génératrice d’espaces singuliers. Devant ces œuvres, il serait peut-être plus approprié de parler de la nature des espaces, au pluriel, de l’ordre du sensible et de la suspension. De l’ordre d’une inquiétante étrangeté aussi, ou encore d’une présence exacerbée telle qu’elle est révélée par le médium photographique et par lequel l’existence du temps, tout au moins le temps anthropocentrique, est inévitablement remis en question. Commissaire: Denis Rioux The exhibition Of Appearance brings together photographic works by seven artists who highlight the notions of space and light, revealing the strangeness of the visible experience. The works of Pierre Blache, Laurence Hervieux Gosselin, Clara Lacasse, Pamela Markus, Isabelle Parson, Sylvie Readman, and Denis Rioux were selected for their exploration of light and its role in generating unique spaces. When viewing these works, it might be more appropriate to speak of the nature of spaces, in the plural, in terms of the sensory and the suspended. In terms of an uncanny strangeness, too, or an exacerbated presence as revealed by the medium of photography, through which the existence of time, at least anthropocentric time, is inevitably called into question. Dans cette exposition intitulée Porosités, la proposition de Sylvie Readman revisite de manière contemporaine le thème pictural de la vanitas, à partir duquel neufs éléments photographiques composent une fable réflexive. Ici, la matérialité accrue du traitement de l’image ainsi que la variation assumée de son support matériel – souple, translucide, rigide, créent un dialogue actif entre le minéral, l’organique, et l’éthéré.&nbsp; Composé de paysages évanescents, d’espaces mémoriels ou funéraires et de références aux longs cycles temporels, cette fable hantée par l’imaginaire de la camera obscura, convoque un ensemble de méditations sur le passage du temps, la finitude de l’existence humaine et la complexité de notre rapport à la nature. This creation project in tandem, resulting from an extended collaboration with artist Denis Rioux, is centered on the notion of photographic materiality.&nbsp; In this exhibition, entitled Porosités, Sylvie Readman's proposal revisits the classical pictorial theme of vanitas, in which nine photographic elements compose a reflective fable. In her work, the increased materiality of the image’s treatment as well as the repeated variation of its material support - flexible, translucent or rigid - create an active dialogue with the realm of its figural referent: mineral, organic, or ethereal.&nbsp; Elle se caractérise au départ comme une observation critique des traces matérielles générées par l’activité humaine. De manière générale, mon approche photographique privilégie les plans frontaux et une composition centrée. Cette stratégie a pour but d’ancrer le sujet dans son espace contextuel, aussi bien que dans celui, formel, de sa représentation bidimensionnelle. Par la suite, lors du travail d’élaboration des images en post-production, j’essaie de repousser nos réflexes habituels de lecture en soumettant les fichiers à différents types de transformations actives: désaturation, passage par le négatif ou la bichromie, altération poussée de la colorimétrie. Avec le présent corpus, ma motivation première était de trouver le point précis d’équilibre où l’image se « re-stabilise », au cœur de son altération; où le représenté acquiert de fait une visibilité et une véracité nouvelle. Il m’est apparu que c’est en déréalisant le référent, que je suscitais le plus efficacement son « apparaître ». Requalifié par ses altérations, l’objet accède en quelque sorte à une nouvelle réalité où il existe alors véritablement comme figure, et requiert notre attention. Ma proposition en l’état convoque ainsi un improbable assemblage de figures concertantes: un paysage urbain évanescent; des scènes crépusculaires désertées ou familières; trois imposantes structures verticales en dialogue: un panorama en négatif avec totem énigmatique, un tracé éphémère déployant un cycle cosmologique; un mémorial assourdi convoquant le temps tragique de l’histoire; une stèle de pierre mutique surgie d’un passé immémorial. Always haunted by the imagination of the camera obscura, my research opens onto a series of meditations on the passage of time and long temporal cycles. It initially presents itself as a critical observation of the material traces generated by human activity. In general, my photographic approach favors frontal shots and a centered composition. This strategy aims to anchor the subject in its contextual space, as well as in the formal space of its two-dimensional representation. Subsequently, when developing the images in post-production, I try to push back against our usual reading reflexes by subjecting the files to various types of active transformations: desaturation, conversion to negative or duotone, and extensive alteration of colorimetry. With this body of work, my primary motivation was to find the precise point of equilibrium where the image “re-stabilizes” itself at the heart of its alteration, where the represented subject acquires a new visibility and veracity. It became clear to me that it was by de-realizing the referent that I most effectively established its “appearance.” Requalified by its alterations, the object somehow attains a new reality where it truly exists as a figure and demands our attention. My proposal in its current form thus calls upon an improbable assembly of concerted figures: an evanescent urban landscape; deserted or familiar twilight scenes; three imposing vertical structures in dialogue: a negative panorama with an enigmatic totem, an ephemeral drawing unfolding a cosmological cycle; a dark memorial summoning the tragic temporality of history; a silent stone stele emerging contretemps ll: site spécifique, 2017 Le projet de recherche À contretemps ll : site spécifique s’est élaboré à partir du site de l’ancienne base militaire à St-Hubert.&nbsp; Pendant près de vingt ans, ce vaste périmètre constitué de bâtiments et de services est demeuré à l’abandon. Attirée par les divers marquages temporels et la “cristallisation” des lieux, l’artiste a documenté pendant près de trois ans ce vaste territoire déserté, enclave marginalisée localisée au centre d’un arrondissement de la rive sud de Montréal.&nbsp; Au-delà de la désuétude des diverses installations, c’est l’idée même de remonter le temps en établissant un parcours transversal qui a été privilégiée. Si les images sont hantées par la question de la disparition, leur installation dans l’espace d’exposition est elle-même travaillée par un principe actif d’évidement. L’organisation des ensembles cherche à établir des correspondances formelles et spatiales entre les images qui permettent de faire émerger des repères temporels. Espace de projection mentale évoquant la partie manquante, la forme vidée de son contenu, mais aussi et de manière plus abstraite, le mouvement perpétuel du temps et des transformations incessantes qu’il génère sur le territoire.&nbsp; À partir de cette forme de méditation portée aux cycles temporels se développe en filigrane cette idée générale de “présences spectrales”. The research project À contretemps ll : site spécifique was based on surveys on the site of the former military base in St-Hubert.&nbsp; For almost twenty years, this vast area of buildings and services remained abandoned. Attracted by the various temporal markings and the “crystallization” of the place, the artist documented for nearly three years this&nbsp; deserted territory, a marginalized enclave located in the center of a Montreal south shore borough.&nbsp; Beyond the obsolescence of the various installations, it is the very idea of going back in time by establishing a transversal path that was privileged. If the images are haunted by the question of disappearance, their installation in the exhibition space strives to manifest in a similar mode, the active role of the gap, or the void. The organization of the various elements strive to establish formal and spatial correspondences between the images, in order to generate the resurgence of temporal makers. A space of mental projection evoking the missing part, the form emptied of its content, but also and in a more abstract way, the perpetual movement of time and the incessant transformations that it generates on the territory.&nbsp; Les œuvres photographiques donnent à voir un ensemble de figures architecturales schématisées, qui dessinent par la diversité de leurs fonctions, une ébauche de trame urbaine.&nbsp; En dissolvant en quelque sorte le présent visible des lieux, manifestement laissés à l’abandon, elles nous transportent à rebours vers leur point d’origine : celui de l’esquisse, de l’épure architecturale axée sur un temps à venir.&nbsp; Ce voyage, qui s’expérimente sur le mode d’un certain futur antérieur, engage ainsi une réflexion plus large sur le déclin d’une certaine utopie moderniste et de ses modèles organisationnels dont nous sommes témoins.&nbsp; The photographs present a series of schematized architectural constructions, which could serve by the diversity of their purposes, as a draft of urban environment. Through the process of dematerialization of the blurred images,&nbsp; the spectator is lead away from the present state of affairs of these architectural remains, and backwards, so to speak, towards their possible point of inception: to their original architectural conceptualization on the drawing board, based on type and functionality. &nbsp; This experience that disrupts the temporal unity of the spaces by relating their present state of rejection to their original state of projection, engages the viewer to meditate on the larger issue of the decline of certain modernist utopias as well as https://sylviereadman.com/S-absenter S’absenter, 2009 Ce projet d’exposition réalisé en partie lors d’une résidence à Buenos Aires, cherche à créer des interrelations entre les médiums photo et vidéo.&nbsp; À l’intérieur du corpus S’absenter, les œuvres vidéo de courte durée explorent d’une manière qui leur est spécifique, une notion élargie de “hors-champ” se rattachant au contexte général des œuvres photographiques qui ont été réalisées dans une manufacture abandonnée. L’ensemble des images photographiques dresse un parcours du lieu déserté qui porte encore les stigmates des événements politiques argentins de 2001.&nbsp; Les œuvres vidéographiques se rattachent quant à elles aux micro-événements qui se sont produits pendant la visite du lieu, tout en ouvrant des perspectives sur différentes temporalités.&nbsp; Du temps suspendu et de l’espace circonscrit des images fixes, les brèves échappées discursives (vidéographiques) s’élaborent ainsi autour de notions événementielles, historiques, et sociales. This exhibition project, realized in part during a residency in Buenos Aires, seeks to create interrelations between the mediums of photography and video.&nbsp; Within the S'absenter body of work, the short video works explore in their own specific way an expanded notion of "hors champ" that relates to the general context of the photographic works that were made in an abandoned factory.&nbsp; The set of photographic images draws up a journey through the deserted place that still bears the stigma of the political events that took place in Argentina in 2001.&nbsp; The video works are linked to the micro-events that occurred during the visit to the site, while opening up perspectives on different temporalities.&nbsp; La mission photographique produite en 2012-2013, s’est développée à partir d’une dizaine d’extraits du roman visant à réintroduire la dimension subjective du couple de protagonistes dans leurs pérégrinations urbaines.&nbsp; Par-delà l’archive mais en dialogue avec lui, cette investigation des lieux revisités du roman cherche à ouvrir une brèche temporelle permettant de conjuguer les différents univers propres aux extraits textuels et aux éléments visuels.&nbsp; Une publication intitulée L’hiver de force à pas perdus a également été réalisée par les éditions du passage. Ce parcours dans l’espace de la ville d’aujourd’hui reprend celui du roman en réinvestissant un territoire urbain mémorablement balisé par Ducharme. The series of photographs entitled L'hiver de force à pas perdus, was produced at the invitation of Gilles Lapointe (art historian) and Élisabeth Nardout-Lafargue (professor at UdeM) on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Ducharme's novel. The photographic mission produced in 2012-2013, was developed from a dozen excerpts of the novel aiming to reintroduce the subjective dimension of the couple of protagonists in their urban peregrinations.&nbsp; Beyond the archive but remaining in dialogue with it, this investigation of the revisited locations of the novel seeks to open a temporal breach allowing to conjugate the various universes specific to the textual extracts and the visual elements.&nbsp; A publication entitled L'hiver de force à pas perdus has also been produced by the éditions du passage. L’exposition collective regroupe une dizaine d’artistes qui ont travaillé avec les archives audio du groupe de recherche Arc_Phono. Les œuvres explorent à leur manière, des questions complexes soulevées par la relation entre les phénomènes sonore et visuel.&nbsp; L’œuvre installative et sonore, intitulée Fossile a été créée en 2012, elle mesure 216 cm x 305 cm. The work Fossil was presented at the Chaufferie, in the Cœur des sciences pavilion at UQAM as part of the group exhibition entitled "Écouter le mouvement du voir", organized by Mario Côté and presented in the context of the 2012 Sound Archives and Radio Voices symposium. The collective exhibition brings together a dozen artists who have worked with the audio archives of the Arc_Phono research group.
